Can main menu behave differently from sub menu?

2 questions - I've searched but haven't found what I've wanted - might not have my terms correct:

1. I'm using the horizontal menu in a table. When I set the separator, I get a vertical separator in the main menu and a horizontal one in the drop/sub-menu. Is there a way to eliminate the vertical divider in the main menu while keeping the one in the sub-menu?

2. Along the same lines, the over color in the main menu is white but I would like a different color as the over color in the drop/sub-menu. Is there any way to make that happen?
