Only showing sub-menus on click
Poster: davebarnes

I have a menu at http://www.octoscope.com/
My customer's goal is to have it behave the same way as the menu at the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/public/page/news-career-jobs.html)
That is, it has the following behavior:
1. Current main menu tab remains highighted even when you mouse over another main menu item (tab). My menu does this.
2. When you mouse over another main menu tab it is highlighted. My menu does this.
3. The sub-menu for the current main menu item stays visible all the time even when you mouse over another main menu item. My menu fails.
I have used:
openmenusbyurl.js to keep the appropriate sub-menu open
openonclick=true;closeonclick=true;keepalive=true; in the sub-menus, but that does not seem to help
Any help would be appreciated as I am in no mood to use another menu.
thanks,
dave

Hi Dave,
I just want to make sure I understand what you want, when you mouseover another main item that has a submenu you don't want it to open and only want whatever one is opened based on the page it is on to stay open?

Ruth,
Correct.
I want the sub-menus to display ONLY when the corresponding main menu item is CLICKED.
Mouseover on a main menu item should only "change the color".

Hi Dave,
You need to use the openstyle='tab'; in the menus. Here's the sample, though you don't need to use the images, i.e. the tabs
http://www.milonic.com/menusample74.php
I think this will work as you want. You need to add the openstyle='tab'; to your main menu, and to also add forgetClickValue="true"; up as part of the subOffset section.

Hi again,
OK, I have played with this, you need to add the forgetClickValue=true; at the top area, then you need to add openstyle='tab'; to the main menu, and then in each item that has a showmenu in it you need to add keepalive=1; Remove the openonlcick and close on click from the menu, and just for your information, in case you want to use them in some other design, those two values are not menu properties, they are either style or item properties

Ruth,
I appreciate your help.
But, it did not work.
IE7 crashed and burned.
It is OK as I am trying another path.

Hi Dave,
I'm sorry, I don't know what the problem is for you as I have IE7 and it seems to work fine for me. If you're going another way you probably don't need it, but if you want the data file, I could post it here for you to see if there is something from your file that's different and causing the problem, though I don't know why IE would crash with the use of the menu.

Hi Dave,
I put your site up at my site using the openstyle="tab"; for you to test in your IE7 and see if it works and is what you want. Let me know as soon as you get it so I can get your pages down from there

You can click any main item and when you get to the page the subs are open. There is one issue but I am working on it. I think it is something Milonic will have to fix.

Hi Dave,
Well, I finally got my tabbed browsing to work and I am seeing the same thing when I type in the address. However, when I then click OK and click the go button again, it loads. And, if I click from the menu once it is loaded, then they all load, unless you right click to open them in a new tab. What I wanted to ask you is, do you want me to remove all this from my site, immediately? If I can leave it up for a bit I have posted to Milonic to check it, but if you need me to take it down, if I can use the layout, but remove all reference links back to your site, but use the menu, I will make up another set up so Milonic can check that. I just don't like putting someone's stuff on my site unless they are comfortable with it since links go to their site. Thanks
Ruth

Thanks, Dave. I have reported to Milonic about this and having the pages is a help for them to find what's going on.
