Menu scripts and site structure

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I haven't hit on the right combinations of search terms for an answer, so sorry for any repetition.

I have a large site that I want to try the menus on, and the files are divided into numerous directories, including ones for scripts, images, and html files in different subject areas (like education, support, classes, etc.) I tried the menu system with the menu files in the scripts directory, but it seems that I have to use absolute addressing (like http://mysite/mydirectory/myimage) in the menu data file to get the menus to work across all of the directories. This is very bandwidth intensive since it needs a DNS lookup for every image and link.

I assume that I could use root-relative addressing (/mydirectory/myimage), but then I couldn't test my pages on my local system and would need to upload every file to the remote server, where they would conflict with the "live" files on the site.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
