Norton blocking server IP address?

Working on a site for a client... added the DHTML Menus to one mockup for testing. I'm considering purchasing, but we're having problems with Norton. (I've read other posts on similar behavior...)

His Norton internet security is blocking the site, and all sites that reside on the same server. (No other sites on the server use these menus.)

If he disables Norton, he can get to the site.
If he re-enables Norton, he cannot.

If I send him a direct link, he can get to the site. But if he clicks on a link anywhere on the site, he gets a "The system cannot find the file specified" error.

He gets this message if he visits ANY site on the same server, as if the server's IP address has been blacklisted.
The same behavior as above holds true: If I send him a link, he can get to that page, but clicking on any links throw the error.

I'm trying to find where within his Norton app the IP blacklist is to do more testing.

What is in the menus that is causing Norton to block an entire IP address?
Might he have Norton configured oddly? Like blocking ANY kind of scripting?

Thanks.

Chris

Norton strikes again, eh?

Why on earth people install this garbage on their computers is anyone's guess.

Basically, we have very little idea why Norton behaves this way and they will not tell us as it would breach their security rules, so the only method at the moment is guess work.

One thing that pops up again and again is the use of restricted keywords, this is normally part of the menu item's text so the first thing to try is to remove all menu items and start with just one menu item and see if it works. if it does, you can then add each item until you find out who the culprit is.

If it still fails even with only one menu item - get back to us with a URL and I'll see what we can find.

HTH,
Andy

Thanks, Andy...

Are you saying the content in the menu links might be jamming it up? Like if one was "news" or "contact us" or "Let us be part of your team"? So, in theory, I could create a page with those links, but without the menus, and Norton would still choke on it?

The weird thing is that it seems to have put a voodoo spell on all sites on that server. He can't visit ANYTHING on that server now.

I'm happy to share the site with you, but it's still in development -- so I'd rather send the link to you backchannel, if that's possible.

Many thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

You need to contact Milonic from the main site. I will post to them here, but am not sure if they will see it in a timely fashion to help. Here is a post by Andy about the Norton security keywords issue perhaps this will help.

Personal opinion (Ruth and I do NOT work for Milonic) - Norton is junk. As Andy mentioned above we have had numerous problems with it before. I have had it actually destroy stuff on my own machines, both PC and Mac.

For virus protection I'd suggest McAfee VirusScan. Works very well, lots of control over things, and that control is all up front - no hidden things to try and find.

Just my two cents, I use AVG free. Of course the free has all the virus stuff but not all the controls that the pro version has :)
