placing xsl value in menu item

I hav to assign an xsl value to my text in aI().
this value comes from the database and is in the form of an xml element

aI("text= <xsl:value-of select=" __at__ menudesc"/> ;
url=theUrlToOpen.htm;target=frame_BuySell;");

What is wrong with the above code,it gives a blank output.
Please,somebody guide me on this
