TEXT INVISIBLE in some menu items unless scrolled over.

The contents of some of the menus are invisible in both FF & IE unless scrolled over yet others appear okay.
I am using Firefox to view the progress of menu development and placement.

Hi,

The text isn't showing because you have the pagebgcolor and pagecolor set to black. When the menu is on the corresponding pages the text then becomes black and not visible. Try setting pagecolor="#d7c786"; instead, this will make the match the gold color showing people where they are in the menu.

There are a couple of things you need to change,

1. You don't need to call the program files for each data file, just call the program files once then the data files

2. You need to have the 'main' menus different names, for example

Thanks for taking a look Ruth.
Cleaned up per your suggestions and changed the (pagecolor="#d7c786")
It works except on menu 2 and 3.
I tried renaming a good menu to the 2 and 3 positions. That didn't work.
I went over every line of code seeing no difference between the work and don't work. Do you see anything that I am missing?

BTW, If you click on WHO WE ARE that menu is gold and the rest white.
Click on HOME and the menus become gold except WHO WE ARE and CONTACT US that become white??!! Any ideas on how to achive a consistent color one way or the other?

Hi,

The pagecolor and pagebgcolor set up the color of the background and the text for any item that has the same url as the page. So, since you have the submenus in menu2 and 3 with urls that do not match the Home page, there is no match and the color remains white, and in the other menus the submenus you have the same url as the homepage so they show the matches, the gold color.

Can you tell me what it is you're trying to do? I don't really understand why you have so many data files. You can get the same look just using one data file with a main menu and the subs. Try the file below

The advantage to one file is that if the visitor has their own stylesheet set for fonts and the fonts are larger then since it's only one menu the items will not run over the top of the one below because the whole menu will expanded down as the font increases.

Also, just as a suggestion, which you might like or not, you might try including an onsubimage and maybe use a gold arrow to match your color. If you would like that and need the arrow I can make one for you.

Brilliant. I misunderstood. I now see that it is different menu TYPES that require separate files. Quite liked your original suggestion for on buttons to be gold so I tweeked the .data file accordingly. I created white arrows for the off state-white text & arrow on black. I am wondering if it is it possible to code for the on state-black text & arrow on gold?
Now on to the next puzzle. I chose this menu type for the Iframe menu control ability. The index pg will give you a clue why. I added a "FLASH VISUALS" menu item. A quick how to in linking added sub-menu swf's to the right hand Iframe would be greatly appreciated. I tried the coding as I understood it from the online "sample" menu but could not get it to cooperate. Once again cheers & thanks for your input.

Hi,

I'm not sure I understand about the Flash. If you are trying to load a flash from the menu into the iframe:

1st you need to add id=I2 to the iframe, you need to have both name and id since some browsers read name some id.

2. in your aI where you want the flash to load set it up like this

Make sure the url is correct to the flash object.

Now, as to the onsubimage, I realized that a gold arrow won't work since the bgcolor is gold. I made some images for the onsubimage and also to have a page image and a pagesubimage. You can right click them and save them if you think they are OK. They're down at the bottom below the data file I'm posting with a lot of changes in it.

You do NOT have to use any of this. I put explanations in where I added things. I'd save the file as test_data.js and then you can just call it and see if you like any, some or none of the things. Don't forget to put the images wherever you want and to make sure the path in this data file is correct.

Copy, paste and save this as test_data.js then substitute it for the menu_data.js file you have to see how things work. Remove the explanation lines including the // in front. Below are the images

One last thing, because right now the Tour item in the main menu and the Home item have the same url listed whenever the Home is a page'match' so is the tour. Once that has a different url then only one main item at a time will show a match.

Hi, thnx, flash concept down pat. I am anxious to see what your examples look like but there seems to be a code error somewhere in the menu_data.js file that you sent as noting displays. Copied the images and have have looked at each line backward and forward and the 3 commented llines are all that catch my eye.

g-day ruth,
is the menu_data.jps file propogated through the site from the index page? For example, The "FLASH VISUALS" menu on the index page has 4 sub items to choose from.
On the "Who We Are and What WE Do" page I have added and tested a small IFRAME under the menu and changed the FLASH sub menu items to different swf files which I don't want as available choices on the index page.
I did this by cloning the 'menu_data.jps' to a file called 'menu_data_about.jps', changed the FLASH submenu swf file options and put that file in the head of that 2nd page.
The menu looks and functions on that 2nd page but the "HOME" button looses it's "on gold" and "double right arrow" properties.
Can the menu have different "FLASH" which = different "IFRAME" menu options on other pages in the site or does the menu have to remain static and take all instruction from the menu_data.jps file on the index page? Each IFrame has it's own unique ID and name.

Hi,

The problem is, if you click that Who Are We link from the main page you get page not found because there is no page called about_ahf which is what you have in the data file, so when you go directly to the page you have which is about the menu can't find a match. Either create the page and upload it as about_ahf or change your url link in the Who Are We and What We Do items to about.

Sorry..The Who We Are url is now pointing to the correct file.
The secondary menu_date_about.jsp file on the Who We Are page puts me back at the original dilema. Home loses its image attributes on the second page and the submenus of Who We Are are now back in conflict with the main menu_data.jsp file and are solid gold again.
The only thing I can think of is to create and have a second data file with only FLASH and it's corressponding swf's on that second menu_data_about.jsp file and let everything else be handled by the original menu_data.jsp file?
I will try that as a test and see if that works.
If that is the case does the 'Main Title' and the 'showmenu' title have to be different on each separate page and data file?

I don't really know what you mean. The only 'attributes' it lose are the page highlighting which is not supposed to work on this page since you are not on the home page. The page properties, ie pagebgcolor etc show up when the page matches the page on which you are. So, on the main page Home should get the gold color and because I put the pageimage into the home item [since it doesn't have a submenu so it would not have a subimage] when you are on the home page it shows that image also.

I don't know what 'conflict' you see. The Who Are We item in the main menu goes to the page properties since that is now a match and the submenus also take the page properties since they are also a match. They do not have the arrows because there is no page image coded into them and they have no submenus so the pagesubimage isn't there.

Can you be a little clearer on what it is you want?

Well, I see the problem as to the weird menus, you are calling both the menu_data.js file and the menu_data_about.js file

So, can you tell me what you want as to the menu on that page? Do you want all the items from the main menu and also all the items from that about menu?

Just call the about menu data file you made, I bet that fixes it.

The core menu_data.js file is consistent on all pages.

I removed the FLASH from the index page menu and created a 2nd menu with only 1 item in it which is the FLASH and called it menu_data_swf1.
On the 'Who We Are' page I did the same thing and called the second menu 'menu_data_swf2.'

Still lose the Home double arrows on the subsequent page which I can't seem to figure out.

I think you do not understand the page properties.

This is NOT an image that just goes into the Home item on all the pages, it is a pageimage and will only show when the url in the address bar of the browser matches the url in the Home item

So it will only show up when the visitor is on that page. It is a 'you are here' indicator. So when you go to another page, then what looks like that pageimage shows up pointing to the item in the menu which matches it so the user goes, 'ah, I'm in the tour menu' Actually, on the other pages it is the pagesubimage which is showing like that, the pagesubimage is really the same as the other image. I made them look the same.

As to the other. You will have problems when you have more than one menu, given you have them sitting one above the other.

I would suggest that you set it up like this

menu_data.js this goes on all pages where you want the regular Flash that is on the main page.

You would only call one of the files depending on which flash you want on the page. Set up like this you do not have to worry about the 'separate' flash menus ending up over an item in the other menu due to fontsize of the visitor or some other problem with how the browser is reading things.
