Highlighting dimensions?

I currently use the above menu.
However when I put my mouse over ontop my sub links each link rectangle is completely highlighted.

What i is to have the highlighted portion to be a rectangle within a rectangle like on the milonic horizontal menu: http://www.milonic.com/menusample78.php
this rectangle would include a border and fit snuggly around the text.

you can see there that the blue highlight is not (although close) touching the extremeties of the dropdown menu.
I believe it has something to do with the padding dimensions of onhighighted color.

can you guys help?
