Intranet menu urls to network folders

Does anyone know how to get rid of the root path automatically being added in front of the url? I need to get to network folders but it adds http:// to all my urls. I need the url to be something like: \\serverXX\folder

UNC paths must be in the form of file://serverXXX/myFolder. I was using backslashes and IE6 was escaping the backslashes.
