Auto detect existance of submenus

I am dynamically creating my menu data file based on items in a database.
Due to the way the database is structured it is not a trivial task to determine if a particular item has children (the processing time is significant).
Is their a way to get the menu to auto detect if a submenu named in the 'showmenu' attribute exists, then not show the 'subimage' for those items?
It already appears to handle the lack of those menus automatically by simply not showing a non-existant menu without errors. However it still shows the 'subimage'
Thank You
Jeff
