aI("text=Menu Samples;showmenu=Samples;");
I'm thinking about bagging the limited broswer text for some small graphical text so I can use a nicer font. What is the code to use a small .gif instead of the text?

Well, if you want to use an image, you'd just put image=whatever; in place of text=whatever. You could also use an overimage with that which would give it the 'mouseOn' mouseOff look. That would be the image code; and then overimage=whatever;
You might check out the Menu Quick Reference Guides which give you all the available parameters. They have them for the style, the menu, and the items. I've got links to them below.
