Netscape 4.7 crashes with MILONIC

I've just been testing my menus in Netscape 4.7, which I know is old but all I have. When I try to use the menus netscape promplty disappears. I then tried browsing the Milonic.com web site and the same thing happened.

If this is a known issue, is there no way of a graceful exit without bringing the browser down.

Cheers.

Phil

Hi Phil,

I think I'm the only volunteer with Netscape4x. I have 4.79 and I'm not having a problem. I can go to any of the Milonic pages and use the menus.

Do you have a test page with the menu so we [I] can take a look and see what's happening? If not can you post the code for your html page, any style sheet you have and your menu_data.js file? I will use that and try and make your page and test it. If you post code [ a page would really be better] please use the code button above.

Hi Ruth,
I have netscape navigator v4.7 and and it doesn't like the menus on http://www.milonic.com - I get the standard xp message asking me if I want to send the error report to microsoft. So I guess there is no point me posting my own code.

What I found in this version of netscape that if I have a menu that stays in the same position and scroll down the page so that the menu re-positions itself, the menu continues to continuoulsy vibrate up and down slighly.

Hi Phil,

Have you considered updated your netscape? I know many people really like 4x, but you could update to 4.79 or 4.8. Unlike IE you can have more than one netscape on your computer so you could download and install a later 4 version to a different folder. That way, you could check out the other to see if it will work for you without getting rid of the one you now have. They have both mac and pc versions.

If you are interested in that you can find archived Netscape versions HERE

Ruth,

Yes I could do that, but thats not really the point. I don't need my web site to work for me, but everyone else out in cyberspace! If it is indeed true that Milonic menus don't work for Netscape v4.70.0.27 then can't this be programmed into the javascript.

As far as I know it does work with Netscape 4x browsers. I will make a report but there's no way to 'narrow' the problem since no one has netscape4x but me, and it is working in mine. I have tried to download the earlier version, but I"m having trouble getting it to 'uncompress' so it can be installed. I'll try again later, but since I"m on dial-up it takes a pretty long time for me to download such large files.

If I can get it installed, I will let you know what I find. There's not that much difference between 4.7 and 4.79 as far as I know, so I'm not sure where the problem would be.

Netscape 4 is very buggy and will crash for no apperent reason.

Also, if you have had other processes running on your PC this may also cause Netscape 4 to crash.

Luckily, there are only a very small handful of people still using this browser so would worry too much about supporting it.

However, the menu has been developed and tested for Netscape 4 and so should work.

Please let me know if this problem still persists after a reboot.

Also, let us have a URL, it could be a combination of more than one thing.

Cheers,
Andy
