Milonic and the Google Toolbar

Hi,

We are registered users of Milonic, and use it on both our external and internal networks. We also use the Google toolbar in IE, mainly as a popup blocker. Our default page for internal users is slow to load, and we are investigating possible causes. Is there any known conflict between Milonic and the toolbar that might be causing this? We're very pleased with Milonic, and I would be happy to eliminate it from suspicion.

Incidentally, switching off the toolbar removes the issue, although losing the toolbar isn't an option unfortunately. Once the menu is cached, the problem is also resolved.

Hi,

The site looks OK for me, came up as quick as one would expect.

The problem could be a missing file that the browser is searching for, or could be several other problems relating to your connection.

One thing you could do is to remove the menu completely and see if it helps, if it does, it could be a problem, with the menu.

I've never heard of the Google toolbar causing problems before though. We use it here and it's fine, we also use the Alexa Toolbar and they all work quite nicely together. Occasionally get an "Access Denied" error but only on websites that Alexa have blocked popups for.

We'll get to the bottom of it, let me know if removing the menu helps or not.

Cheers
Andy

I use the Google bar with XP Pro/IE6 with no menu problems at all. Everything comes up immediately.

Thanks for your replies. We've done a great deal of further testing.

We still appear to be getting a problem with initial load of a page when the Google Toolbar is loaded in the browser.

What we see is :

if you clear the cache using Tools, Internet Options, set the page to your home page so that it defaults to that page. Close the browser, then start it up again, we first see the main picture appear, then a delay of a few seconds before the menubar appears.

If we go through the same procedure, clearing the cache etc then switching off the Google toolbar, closing the browser and then starting the browser again, we don't see the delay.

Windows 98/IE 6 and Windows XP/IE 6.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Chris

I am now seeing a slight delay between the page opening and the menu painting. This is with both Google and SP2 in place.

However, there are some problems you need to take care of first... :)

1. You have removed all copyright information from the code files. This is not allowed, as stated in those files...

When you...

2. ...update to the current version - 5.46, you are apparently running 5.40 - please leave those statements completely intact.

Note also that quite a few bugs have been fixed in the last 6 versions. Maybe a simple update will help. Further, as stated on our home page, only the most current version is supported.

Thanks John,

It wasn't our intention to remove the copyright notices. We had variously experimented with paring all the code back on the page in the hope of a quicker load time, and removed them inadvertantly. Apologies for that.

The version has now been updated to 5.46, but unfortunately without obvious improvement. The delay you experienced occurs to a greater or lesser extent across our network and also standalone machines, both on 98 and XP.

Thanks for fixing that, Chris.

Right now I am unable to get to your site at all to take another look (server not found). Probably a 'net problem. Will have to try later.

Hi,

Have you tried moving the menu files up to just after the body tag?

It seems like your site is having to load all of the other stuff before it actually gets to the menu. This will obviously show a slight delay because work has to be done by the browser before it even gets to the menu.

Let me know if moving the menu <SCRIPT> refefences up as the very first object after the <BODY> tag helps or not.

Cheers
