Dulaign Menus w/ Cascading and Open By URL

I know that cascading is still a work in progress, but it addressses some navigation issues I am eager to solve.

I want to have horizontal at the top and a cascading side menu, but I want to the second level side menu to stay open on sub sections. I have tried:

which works fine on the horizontal, but my goal would be to have this only apply to the side menu.
