Problems with converting to Version 5

My version 3 menus were working correctly in 3 different browsers I believe, but not in a fourth, Opera 7. So, I have just upgraded from V3 to V5.0. Unfortunately on the seven pages I am using the code it is not consistent. The mainmenu has 3 columns, the first item appears in the secondary colour permanently as does one of the submenu items.

Also unlike version three the menu image is not a solely submenuimage but appears on the mainmenu items as well. Is there an option that will turn it off on the mainmenu?

As the test scripts are on my computer not our ISP's, I can't show them except by mailing the appropriate files. Here is the working web-site.

5.3 is current, and there have been numerous changes/fixes. Please update, let us know when that's complete, and we'll take another look (if needed!).

Some points to consider...

1. effect= is no longer used. New is...

See the _data file included in the download.

2. Some syntax corrections. You have...

Should be...

Note the removal of one of the ;; after choirs, and the ending sequence - a ; after the last item in the list, and also at the close of the aI. The same is true for all aI statements.

3. You have...

Is this still a .js file? I'm not sure about the use of <!--, etc., as comment indicators. Typically in JS they would simply be //; e.g., //top=; would comment out that line.

In the aI above you have separatorsize=-->"). You're apparently closing a comment (if that sequence works), but I don't see where you've opened it. That line would, therefore, be invalid.

Some of the problems, the ones with the <-- in them are the result of using that to comment out certain areas of your original version 3 array file. So in version 3 you have That's causing weird things when you convert. I suggest that you take your version 3 menu_array.js file, remove the comment codes so the above would become Save it with a new name..i.e. menu_array1.js, then convert that. Once converted you can go back and use // not <!-- to comment out lines in the new version 5 menu_data.js file that you don't want to be active. Also, note the things, John mentioned about the extra ; and missing ; and the overfilter. Hope all this helps.

By now you will have realized that I am pretty good at cuting & pasting, but understanding JS

Anyway, I took all the advice I received and most of the problems have gone away, like 99%. I am still struggling with some colours to closer emulate V3 but the one thing that is still pretty ugly, is the images on the mainmenu. Is there anyway to turn them off, a la V 3? Size, fonts and colours will be OK then,

Cut and paste is a good thing Usually What images? I don't even see any images in the code for your main menu. I know you said that it's on your desktop. I guess because you're working on it? But, if you could put up a test page, even if it only had the menu on it and the correct background color of what the page would have, it would be so much easier to help.

This line of code is in the data_menu.js file I posted.

This is the current line;

The pin appears on the submenus of the URL I posted but not on the 3 "mainmenu" items. On the index page now, the pin appears in the 3 "mainmenu" items.

I will try V 5.31 to see if it helps.

OK, I understand. That's because the submenuimage is showing anywhere that there is a call to show a submenu. So, to fix it do this: In the menu_data.js file copy and paste the following just below the style1 definition at the top which lists the onbgcolor, oncolor etc.

Then take the line subimage="SubMenuImage.gif"; out of the style1 definition. You now have two style definitions. Leave the mainmenu with the style=style1; and go to all the submenus and replace style1 with style2. Now the subimages will only show in the submenus, not in the main top menu.

OK, I tried that with some funny results. First, after opening the V 3.51 and playing with menu_data.js, I copied the new root js files into my test directory.

When I put the style2 defintion right after the first line where style1 is defined I have no submenus. When I put it at the end, the pin appears on the mainmenu but not on the submenus. I will paste the code for the latest revision of menudata and also the html for my index.shtml file

I'm sorry the mistake was mine in my description of how to do it. It doesn't go in the first style, it goes after it, like so. Sorry. You might check out the Beginners' Guide section of the forum. There's not much there yet, we are adding as we get time. Nothing fancy just things to give you a feel for the menu.



Then the rest as you have it, with the style2 in the submenus.

You don't need to be sorry, I forgot the primary rule....RTM

After I posted last I did go to your beginners guide and found the correct syntax. It worked but as I was making changes to get it to look and feel like the current menu I am using, I started getting error messages whenever I hit a submenuitem with a pin displayed. Syntax error in line 16. After finally opening the debugger, the menu is not in the file I had been editing but in mmenuns4.js

I am pretty sure something I did has bollixed it so I am posting the changed menu_data code again. I really do appreciate your patience.

You're welcome. Glad to hear it. I'll take it down.

Note the syntax in the _data file (again these were not the cause of the problems)...

1. Removed instances of ;; .

2. All aI statements should end as you see - ;"); - closing ; after the last parameter, and a ; at the end of the aI.

3. I removed fontsize="14px"; from the copyOf because it was already in the style1 (no biggie).

4. Parameters that are numeric typically don't need the "" (style2.padding="3"; can be style2.padding=3;), although the menu will now accept it either way.
