Issue with center-aligned site

Trying to set up the menu using a center-aligned site. I do some quick math to locate the correct left/top point in relation to the client resolution, and all is well - until, of course, someone decides to navigate with their favorites tab open in IE< which throws off the placement :-\

Is there a way to align the menu left/top to a div id, or, absolute the positioning so that it will always start in the same position?

thanks in advance
