WinXP Style Menus and Relative positioning problem
Poster: Aaron

I have a problem with the menus where the border appears mis-aligned when highlighting any of the menus, this only seems to happen when I use position="Relative"; in the menu_data.js file.
To explain better, I've uploaded 2 versions of the menu:
http://www.msfnhosting.com/beta/ - Positioned Relative
http://www.msfnhosting.com/beta2/ - None
I know that my existing table there isn't interfering, because I tested on a very simple html file that had a few lines of text, and positioned the menu underneath, the border was still mis-aligned.

Well, what a coincidence!!
I have been having the same problems with a page i am testing today. I never noticed it at first because i was testing my page using Mozilla FireFox, but once i tested my page with IE6 the problem with the borders appears.
Also on my page, the mouse has to be in a specific part of the menu item for the sub menu to open.
Sorry i can't help you, but at least your not alone!!
Andy, any reason for this??
Paul.

Can you try onborder & offborder 1px solid #....;
replace borderstyle, borderwidth and bordercolor.
Is there a good source for the little icons?
Thanks,
maz

on border and off border are the problem, well on my page anyway.
I am in the process of putting up an example page for you all to see...

I think that might have meant onborder offborder is the solution, but I'll wait and see.

I already have onborder and offborder in the code, removing it or changing colours doesn't fix it.
Code:
with(XPMainStyle=new mm_style()){
onbgcolor="#C1D2EE";
oncolor="#000000";
offbgcolor="#EFEDDE";
offcolor="#000000";
bordercolor="#8A867A";
borderstyle="solid";
borderwidth=1;
separatorcolor="#EFEDDE";
separatorsize="2";
padding=3;
fontsize="75%";
fontstyle="normal";
fontweight="normal";
fontfamily="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica,Arial";
subimagepadding="2";
onborder="1px solid #316AC5";
offborder="1px solid #cccccc";
}
onbgcolor="#C1D2EE";
oncolor="#000000";
offbgcolor="#EFEDDE";
offcolor="#000000";
bordercolor="#8A867A";
borderstyle="solid";
borderwidth=1;
separatorcolor="#EFEDDE";
separatorsize="2";
padding=3;
fontsize="75%";
fontstyle="normal";
fontweight="normal";
fontfamily="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica,Arial";
subimagepadding="2";
onborder="1px solid #316AC5";
offborder="1px solid #cccccc";
}
Something is budging the border down-right by about 1 pixel or something on mouseover, and only happens in IE like sparkstack says.
The source for the icons were done by me. I made screenshots of my icons in Windows XP, then made them transparent in Fireworks.

I'm saying the conflict may be borderstyle, borderwidth and bordercolor, try removing them, you don't need them with onborder and offborder. Most likely this is just temporary but it might solve the problem.

Tried that, it removed some of the borders I had surrounding the menu itself (which I want to leave there), and made the border (when highlighting one of the menus) a lot worse, by about 3 pixels or so.

maz, if you can, could you download menu sample 12, add position="relative"; to menu_data.js, and the problem will be visible in IE. It might be easier for you to figure out what the problem is?

Yes, thank you.
I just tried that exact link with no problems. The web is sometimes a spastic thing. This morning I couldn't connect to anything, now all is well. Perhaps just a temporary routing problem between you and Birmingham, but the server is working.

Downloaded the menu this morning (the link works now... odd)
Uploaded the menu to the test page site here
The border problem is now fixed in IE
BUT, when the menu is not in a table, moving the mouse over any part of one of those thumbnail images on the right will make a larger image appear underneath. This is Good.
When the menu is in a table, you have to make sure the mouse is directly over the middle of one of those thumbnail images to make the larger verison to appear. This is Bad.
Andy, any chance of a fix to this too ??

Update:
I have noticed that if you move the mouse over the thumbnail, move out, then put the mouse back over the thumbnail, the main image will appear.
This happens in both IE6 SP2 and Mozilla FireFox.
Any Ideas?

I don't know why when I try your url, I get page cannot be found?
When you say thumbnail you mean an icon? I think of a thumbnail as generated resize.
What I've noticed, maybe my slow connection, hesitation such as overimage onbgimage on menubgimage, probably all those images together. Overimage on menubgimage is faster and a smoother transition.

Hi sparkstack,
On your tabletest page, when I mouse over a thumbnail, I get an "object expected" error. Offhand, I'd guess that it's because your thumbnail menu item calls the showtip() function, but no such function exists. I'm assuming your intent is to use the tooltips.js module, but it hasn't been loaded into your test page. I'd take care of that, then retest your thumbnail setup and see if the problem you described goes away.
Some other observations from a personal standpoint (and I hope you don't mind). I think the page look pretty cool, and I think your use of the menu to do the thumbnail thing is innovative. Nice job. But... and this is purely my own opinion... I tend not to like it when a site resizes my browser window. Just thought I'd mention it, for what it's worth.
Cheers,
Kevin

Well, that's what I get for looking at the NS4 page - this time you beat me to it, Kevin...
I am definitely on your side with the window resize thing. In fact, I will leave a site that resizes OR moves my window. My desktop is set up a certain way (limited real estate at home), and for somebody else to come in and mess that up is an intrusion. Sorry, spark, but I just don't see a reason for it.
Other than that - very nice presentation.

Maz:
Yes. I mean an Icon. I was having the same "page not found problem" when i tried to access page from home yesterday. although i could see it at work..
Kevin
Yes. I am undecided about the tooltips. They don't seem to work the same as regular windows tootips i.e they will bring up scrollbars on the window if the tip extends outside of the page area.
As for the resize window thing, shouldn't actually be there; best i remove it pronto...
EDIT
Problem now seems to be fixed. Seems to be related to the tootips menu calls...
