alt text for menu images

Does anybody know if it's possible to add alt text the images used for the main menu (not necessarily the submenus)?

I added imagealt= like this:
aI("url=http://www.milonic.com/;image=images/button_about_foundation.gif;overimage=images/button_about_foundation.gif;imagealt=About the Foundation;");

But it doesn't show the text in IE 6, nor does a screen reader (HomePage Reader) read it. Do I have the syntax correct?

The page is here: http://test.hinshawdesign.com/slplf/men ... _v2.1.html, and the alt text is on the first button (About the Foundation).
