Fixed height for menus

I'm working with a image map of the US that uses the menu like in sample #4:

One of my items in the map is the state of Indiana and I'd like to be able list all 92 counties in the state when you click on the state. The problem is that the menu will stretch to the height of the browser window and also does not include the scrollbars (overflow="scroll").

So, I guess this is my feature request: to be able to specify a set height for any menu (independent of itemheight) and thereby enable vertical scrolling, regardless of the browser window's height.

PS: IMHO, Milonic DHTML Menu is hands-down the best menu system on the web. Kudo's to Andy and everyone else who's worked on this!!

Slightly confused here (as usual). Are you saying you're having a problem with the scroll feature? If so, please post a URL so we can look at it.

I think I get what hes saying. Hes got a menu thats LONG so obviously it is going to have a scroll bar. But what he wants is to be able to contrain the overall height of the menu so that it doesn't have to hit the bottom of the browser window before it scrolls. He wants to keep the menu small and contained within the area 'around' Indiana but with the scroll bars to support the large amount of selections.

I think this is a good request, worthy of exploration. Say I have a menu with 10 items in it, and I only want to show 4 at a time, there should be a way to either (1) tell it how many overall pixels the menu height should be so only a certain amount show at a time or (2) say how many menu items should be displayed at one time and if there where more, it would put scroll bars.

I like it, it'd be a neat feature that I have yet to see. It would almost give the menu the functionality of a drop down list box HTML, kinda sort.

I think it's a great idea also. I wonder if in that dropdown look..which it has but it drops the full length of however many items you have...wonder if with that drop down look there's a way to get an auto scroll if you put your mouse on the last item. I HATE scroll bars, They look so yucky..gray, fat and definately not artistic.

OS X, what is that? I mean I know OS is operating system..I think. I've got a PC is that a Mac? Unfortunately the only 'mactype' I have is an old appleII, gosh we need a smilie for rotfl.

Yes OS X is currently the latest version of operating systems for the Mac. Its a very nice, eye-pleasing OS thats also very stable. Someday I will own a copy (and a mac).

You know the old, "If you have to ask you can't afford it" routine? Well...

Actually, G4 prices have come down a bit because of the G5 release. If you're a student you can get a discount from the Apple store online, usually $200-$300 off retail. I just checked there - $1,799 - $2,699 for a 1.6GHz to a dual 2GHz. You can custom-build you own machine right online. Prices can get nasty, but so is the machine G4s go $1,199 - $2,976 for 1.25GHz to a dual 1.25GHz. These are all desktop machines.

Also keep your eye on the back pages of the Mac magazines for discounts from the mail order places.

I wish there was a cheap way to get macs, like by building them yourself. I put together my top o' the line computer at home for just under $500. Can't do that with a mac unfortunately. I wish it could be, but oh well. Anyone heard of or seen a operating system (like linux) with a GUI like OS X?

If I remember right, years ago there used to be, but Apple pulled the plug on it. There were clones as well (most licensed by Apple), but they, too, got dropped.

Right now I struggle to pay for gas to get to a job that doesn't pay me enough to buy gas So, my dual G5 and '04 Durango and motorhome all wait for the lottery...

I'm here, answering questions when I can. College kicked back in (as you well know John) so I am balancing it all...along with my wife, two kids, 35 hrs __at__ work and a side project or two. But I hope to be done with those projects by the end of September, they're just a couple web pages and a application. I am in my final semester at University at Buffalo only taking two courses, but it still deserves attention. But I'm still here, if not posting as much, but I am keeping up, trust me. I'm hangin in there.... .

The property you want is itemheight.

This can be applied to your menu items to set the height. There isn't a global height for menus because it will depend on the number of menu items the menu contains.

Have you got a URL that we can see?

Also, I believe there was a slight problem recently with popups and scroll bars so an upgrade might fix it.

BTW - This is to the original question about the map of the USA not showing scroll bars for the 92 items.

We seem to have gone a little off track with this one

will there ever be support for this? like the original question, i'm looking for a way to limit the size of the menu. even though my window may be big enough to hold the entire height of the menu, i'd like to limit the menu to 100 pixels for example.
