V3 and Netscape 4.75

Hi,

We've discovered that Version 3 (or our implementation of it) doesn't seem to work with NS 4.75 - is this correct or are we doing something wrong?

Example can be seen on one of our customer sites at http://wwwexternal.scri.sari.ac.uk/SCRI ... e/home.asp

Many thanks in advance,

Kirk

I don't have 4.75, but I do have 4.79 and everything seems to work. If I mouseover the left column I get little boxes with notes, like search, logoff, etc. Just thought I'd let you know. And upgrading to v5 if that's an option for you would be a good thing, it does so much more.

That version is really out of sight :!: Just for my own curiosity, why are you trying to support something so old (really not being a snot here!)? I used to have 4.79 here, but dumped it, so I can't look at your problem. Sorry.

Note also that the v3 series is no longer supported by Milonic. If you can, move up to v5.

I use it for two things....one is to check pages like here when someone asks..so now this person knows that whatever the 4.75 problems are they don't happen in 4.79 :P , and the other is to view my pages after I edit them. I know the browser is old, I don't brows with it and I guess I'll have to upgrade my IE soon [which WON'T let me have more than one version grrr}, but there are a lot of people out there who still use it especially things like schools, some local, state govs, some of the smaller charities....ones that don't get the funds to do the upgrades... since upgrading in many of those places means upgrading huge $ worth of whole systems and the equipment to handle upgrading one item.....and there are a bunch... so, I just check to make sure what I have "degrades" acceptably for that browser
:)

Actually I was asking Kirk, but that's OK, Ruth.

Not sure about that statement. Since we're talking NS here, upgrades are free, so what's the problem?

well, shut my mouth   Heck, I don't know, I just know from experience from my working place that many are way behind..until '96 we had 3 computers in our language lab, and they were provided by me because I had them and they had language programs on them useful to my students [two VERY old apple 2s with a program not usable on the newer models, and one ibm clone XT or AT or something like that with a thing called xtgold on it and a language translation testing program. And 3 tvs, one about 10 years old and two 13in ones I bought so my students could watch language videos.....Boy but did they always have money to fly to every conferences ever listed! It was only in 98 that they actually hired a qualified person to run the computer lab..someone who actually KNEW about computers, the internet, etc.

I think you mean XTree Gold...a file directory browser-type program for DOS? If thats what you mean, I loved that program. It was great! Ahh, the old days...don't miss 'em one bit!

yes, that's it.... I had it so the students had a 'menu' to click for the programs since most had NO idea how to do get it from the dos prompt and so they could 'park' the drive, since that was NOT automatic on those old PCs. And I do miss the dos days, it's been so long I'm even forgetting how to do some things, you kind of have to be using it, though I guess like riding a bike you don't really forget, if I had to do it again I'm sure it would come back!

We have V3 functionality bundled in our Content Management System and some of our partners have testing which will include NS 4.7X. I know that it accounts for a very low percentage of browser usage on the web in general but I was asking the question to see if anyone could share any wisdom on this.

The fact it works in NS 4.79 is good to know and I will certainly pass this information on to my partner.

I just wondered if there was anything in our implementation which could be causing problems with NS 4.75 (our and our partners' benchmark version of NS).

Thanks to all who replied, anyone reading that can shed any light on this for NS 4.75 would be gratefully received.

At this stage V5 of the menus is not an option for us. Can anyone summarise the differences from a coding/implementation point of view. We only expose a very limited subset of the menu functionality (basically pop-ups) and don't know the extent of the upgrade.

Best Regads,

Kirk

I've since noticed Ruth's reply re Version 4.79 - I don't think it does work in NS 4.79 - if you mouseover the "Research Areas" should should get a menu with options including "Mechanisms and Processes", "Genes to Products", etc. Do you see that Ruth?

Cheers,

Kirk
