Menu slows when there is a SELECT form element on page

Hi,

I am using RC26.

I have found that when there is a select box at the top of my page (it is for quick links) the menu performance slows considerably. To the extent where the menus become hard to use. The SELECT only has 3 items in it.

My menus don't use any shadows, or effects, and works very snappily when the SELECT is removed.

Any ideas how to get round this?

Thanks,
Joel

That's odd... I don't notice the slowdown in a test I just tried (using local html pages). Do you have a test page up that we can check out? What browser/os are you using? Does the slowdown occur reliably in many different browsers?

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your help.

I have tested on a few configs. There is 1 scenario on my PC (IE6 SP1 Win2k) where there is an issue. I have created 3 test pages (with RC28)...

http://www.henderson.com/misc/live_test/test_all.asp
http://www.henderson.com/misc/live_test/test_bg.asp
http://www.henderson.com/misc/live_test/test_sel.asp

...it is the test_all.asp that causes the menu to slow down.

This includes a select and a background tile in the body tag. test_bg.asp has just the background and is fine, and test_sel.asp has just the select and is fine.

I have been unable to repeat the issue on anybody elses PCs however...

IE6 SP1 Win2k - OK
IE5.5 SP2 Win2k - OK
Opera 7.21 Win2k - OK
IE5.5 SP2 NT4 - OK

This must mean there is somthing odd about my config. Maybe my installation of a range of other browsers? (Opera, NS, Mozilla etc)? Or some development software (DW, VS.NET)?

Hopefully its a one off. If you could check to see if you get the problem at all, that would be great.

Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel,

Took a look at all three test pages in IE6 SP1/Win2k. Didn't notice any response slowdown in test_all.asp compared to test_bg.asp.

FWIW,

Kevin

I, too, was unable to see any difference in the 3 pages. All appeared to come up immediately.

Safari/Mac.

Hi,

Hopefully its just my config. I too have not been able to replicate the problem on any other machines.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Joel
