Placing menu relative to a TD element

If I put the menu relative to a TD element, and the height of this TD is much higher than the menu height, the submenues will popup below the TD element I have placed the menu in.

This leaves a gap between the menu and submenu item. Is there any way to remove this gap? (beside making my TD smaller of course, but it's a design issue...)
