borders/subimages with on/off class

A number of us seem to be having a frustrating time since using on/off class and declaring any border bottom/top/right/left etc puts an extra one on subimages. It seems either that can't be done or to do it, you have to leave out subimages, or not care that the menu gets say 2px border and the subimage 4px. Anyway, I was wondering, and I don't know if this is possible or even feasible.....perhaps there's a way as the menu develops to get so that you have to actually declare a border for a subimage if you want one and by default if it's not declared there wouldn't be any? Not sure you can actually split something like a border property like that? Hope that makes sense. It was just a thought from one who doesn't really know about creating something like milonic.
