Specifying menus and submenus

Looking at the source for the vertical_data.js cna some tell me something.

How does the program know whether or not you are adding a top menu or submenu? I see the stuff is indented but can not tell any other difference as to how the submenus get assigned to the overall menu item.

Just trying to understand how this gets setup becuase I want to be able to create part of the menu part of the menu on the fly from database entries.

never mind I figured it out...It is with show menu...I knew as soon as I posted asking (after an hour looking at it) the anser always comes..
