Spacing on a vertical menu

is there away to have a space between the menu items, that can be set to how ever much room between the menus as i want? rather than a seperator bar.

Have you tried increasing the Menu Item Padding value?

Additional options: You can also use blank "header" items, as explained here. Or, you could try specifying a margin in the menu array's 21st element (e.g. "margin=5;"), as in the XP Style Menu example.
