problem with long menu items

Hi,
i'm having a problem with long menu items. when they exceed 1100 chars (approximatively), my page get broken, in fact large pieces of the page are "sucked" into the menu and i get a giant menu item.
i use ie6/XP.
is there any known limitations on menu items length? thanks.
