menu color

I'm trying to get the menu system to work on my school's website. The menu itself works fine, but I have a problem with the menu color. As the pages are designed by students, not all of the pages use the same background, color scheme, etc. Rather than have many different menu scripts, is there a way to have each html page pass variables to a single script to control the color scheme?
