IE stack overflow error

Trying to use mmenu on a site where a couple of pages have a java applet loaded. Though mmenu basically works OK on most pages, on these two applet pages I have a problem:
On one page I get a stack overflow error msgbox nominally put up by IE (v5.5), with error at line 467. I guess this relates to an error in the applet code, but I've no way of knowing for sure. (The applet is actually loaded via an external link). But as soon as I cancel the alert, all seems OK. On the other page (same applet) the mmenu simply doesn't appear, though the applet is working fine.
I know no-one can trouble-shoot this specific problem without further information about the applet (which I don't have), but does anyone have any thoughts about possible generic causes of this sort of problem or better still any possible generic solutions?
