Help: Down arrow image overlaps text

I customized the default horizontal menu (ver 3.4) by changing the text in the menus. Now however the down arrow that denotes an expanding menu overlaps the text. How do I prevent this?

Also, what is the field "alternative URL" used for?

Add a couple of    to the text that appears in the menu:
like HOME  

Alternate URL is for showing a submenu from that menu-item.
