First of all, great script for creating menu's
just one question is it possible to set the right/left padding instead of using padding in the script that controls the padding of the entire menucell. At this moment I use transparent images like this:
,"<img src='transparant.gif' width='10' border='0' height='5'>Links>","show-menu=links","link.php","",1
but as you can see this costs a lot of time changing the padding afterwards.

Personally when trying to position text in a menu cell I either use the alignment option in the array, or a series of non-breaking spaces. Since the overall width of the cell is determined by an array setting I'm afraid I don't see the need for anything other than this. I hope this answers your question, if not could you explain better what you are trying to do?
Cheers,
