Want to change menu item and URLs dynamically

I would like to write Javascript code to dynamically change the text in a menu item as well as its URL. I need to know how to reference specific menu items - does anyone have any insight to this?

Basically, I want it to work like a dropdown box - the user selects a menu item, and that item then becomes the "selected" item on the top level of the menu.

Any help would be appreciated! Great product by the way!
