Transparent background but not Text?

Howdy,
I'm putting my menu on the left side and I have a border running down that side. I want the border to show through completely so it looks like the menu is actually part of that border. If I set the Opacity to 0 it makes the entire menu transparent. I want jsut the background to be transparent (or to just not be a background). Can I do this somehow?
If not, can I have the background for the main menu be a graphic and have no background for the sub menus?
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks,

Any luck on this? I have a slick graphic that goes across the top and I want it to bend towards the left side and put my menus "on top" of the graphic.
Thanks,
Chad
