Nested Frames

My menu won't work with nested frames, are there any issues or workarounds to using the menu with nested frames?
Basically I have an initial frameset containing a sidebar and mainframe
The mainframe contains a nested frameset, spit into two columns
The idea is that the menu in the sidebar provides a milonic menu to extend into the opposite frame (the nested frame, 'main' inside 'mainframe')

Any ideas would be appreciated.
