define a picture [b]once[/b] for all links

Is there a way to define a picture once for all links?

I would like to have the same picture in front of all links (like the menu images (arrow.gif)).
Provides a possibility a picture to define "once" and not in front of "every" link? I think it's a heavy loading time, if I have a 1-3 kb picture in front of fifty links or more?
The arrow pics shall have left also at pulldown, if needed, it shall not become a replacement for it.
